Ostafyevo
The Ostafyevo near Moscow is associated with many famous Russian writers and artists of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 18th century the Ostafievo estate was a property of A.I. Vyazemsky, the father of a well known Russian poet Pyotr Vyazemsky. In his time the estate received its classical main house, which is part of the museum nowadays. After his death the estate was owned by his son, a famous Russian poet P.A. Vyazemsky. His guardian, the great Russian historian and author Nikolai Karamzin spent twelve years at Ostafyevo working on his famous "History of the Russian State".
Throughout the nineteenth century Ostafyevo was closely linked with such illustrious names like Alexander Pushkin, Vasily Zhukovsky, Konstantin Batyushkov, Ivan Turgenev, Nikolai Gogol and many others, including the famous Polish poet Adam Mitskevich.
The main house of Ostafyevo is situated in a wide park, not far from a river bank. Various monuments commemorating the estate’s famous guests are scattered throughout the park.
What is worth seeing at the estate now? At present, you can wander through the estate’s main house. The house hosts a memorial museum of the Russian poet Pyotr Vyazemsky and the many famous guests, mainly poets and authors, who have visited the estate. A leisurely stroll around the old park with its many sculptures can also be a source of great pleasure.
